Discovering the Charm of Ancient Cusco

In Cusco, my digital nomad life starts with a stroll on the cobbled streets. It's a beautiful blend of the old and new. The city proudly shows off its Incan roots, as seen in the sturdy walls and colonial buildings with terracotta roofs. Bright Peruvian flags wave alongside bursts of flowers on balconies, bringing color to the historic setting.

This area, framed by quaint shops and cozy cafés, offers the perfect setting for my remote work. Here, history isn't just found in books; it's lived and breathed. Ancient stones now share space with the modern buzz of digital life. You'll see locals in traditional dress passing by tourists with their latest tech, a reminder of how seamlessly Cusco marries its past with our present.

Cusco is more than a backdrop for my work, it's a living lesson in history and culture. This city, where centuries-old architecture meets the digital age, is an inspiring office for a solo female traveler like me. Every step tells a story here, enriching my life and work in ways I never imagined.

Selecting the Perfect Workspace

Before setting foot in Cusco, I understood that as a digital nomad, the cornerstone of my stay would hinge on robust internet connectivity. With this in mind, I combed through numerous Airbnb listings, prioritizing those with high-speed internet as a non-negotiable amenity. Knowing the infrastructure in Cusco has improved tremendously, I still reached out directly to hosts to confirm the reliability of their Wi-Fi, asking for screenshots of speed tests where possible. This extra step was crucial for ensuring that my online work would proceed without a hitch.

Upon arrival, I was pleased to find that Cusco's internet infrastructure had indeed kept pace with the needs of the digital nomad community. Many accommodations, mainly those catering to a longer-term stay, now boast fiber-optic connections, offering the bandwidth necessary for everything from video conferencing to large data transfers.

Despite the comfort of my well-connected Airbnb, the allure of Cusco's vibrant café culture often calls me out. I am drawn to the myriad of quaint coffee shops that dot the cityscape. These aren't your average cafés; they are hubs of creativity, brimming with Inca-inspired art and the charm of Spanish colonial architecture. It's here, over a cup of rich Peruvian coffee, that my productivity soars. The inspiring surroundings and the reliable internet, a result of Cusco's dedication to accommodating the digital workforce, make for an unparalleled office space.

For those looking for a long-term stay, I always suggest verifying the internet speeds personally or via reviews from previous guests. In Cusco, a city balancing the tightrope between its ancient heritage and modern demands, you'll find that a seamless digital nomad experience is well within reach as long as you plan carefully.

Weekend Escapades and Local Explorations

As a digital nomad who savors the essence of slow travel, I've found that Cusco's surrounding wonders perfectly balance my work life. My weekends are dedicated to exploring, and I've been particularly selective about joining small group tours to ensure a more intimate and enriching experience.

Journey to Machu Picchu

The pinnacle of my excursions was undoubtedly Machu Picchu. Coordinating with Inca Rail, I chose their 360° service for the journey, which provided panoramic views of the breathtaking landscape en route to the ancient citadel. The train journey was a preamble to the awe-inspiring beauty and mystery of the iconic Incan ruins, allowing me to fully immerse in the magic of the surroundings. First-time visitors should read my article Machu Picchu: A First-Timer's Essential Guide. It is a compilation of my research before booking my trip to Machu Picchu.

Horseback Riding Experience

My adventures also took me on a horseback ride through less-trodden paths around Cusco, including Inkilltambo and the Temple of the Moon. Learning about the Andean worldview while surrounded by the enchanting Eucalyptus forests and the region's natural fauna made for an unforgettable experience. Just a stone's throw from the vibrant streets of Cusco, the Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park stands as a majestic reminder of the Inca Empire's past splendors. Hidden within its expanse is a treasure less frequented by the casual tourist, the enigmatic Chuspiyoq, also known as the Temple of the Fly.

Our journey delves deeper into the park's heart, where Inkilltambo awaits, just a brief horseback ride from Chuspiyoq. This ancient Huaca (sacred site) served as a ceremonial sanctuary, embodying the spiritual essence of the Inca civilization.

The tour unfolds amidst these hallowed grounds, where each stone and path tells a story. We explored Inkilltambo's intricate terraces and chambers and the mysterious Amaru Wasi, known as the house of the serpent.

Humantay Lagoon Trek

The trek to Humantay Lagoon stands out as a particularly enchanting experience that offers a profound connection to the natural wonders of the Andean landscape. The adventure began with a scenic drive to the small town of Mollepata, where the crisp morning air was complemented by a warm and hearty breakfast, fueling our bodies for the day ahead.

As we continued to the trailhead at Soraypampa, the anticipation built. The trek started with a briefing from our knowledgeable guide, who gave us insight into the terrain and what to expect during our ascent. The path to Humantay Lagoon was a physical and a visual journey, with each step revealing dramatic shifts in the landscape, from lush greenery to rugged mountain scenes.

The hike itself took approximately an hour and a half, with the trail winding upwards towards the lagoon. It was a challenging yet invigorating climb, as we navigated the rocky terrain and felt the altitude's impact. Despite this, the camaraderie of the small group and the shared moments of encouragement made the ascent a bonding experience.

Upon arrival at the lagoon, any fatigue melted away, replaced by awe at the sight of the lagoon's striking turquoise waters set against the backdrop of the imposing snow-capped Salkantay mountain. The lagoon's surface was so clear and still that it mirrored the sky and the surrounding peaks, creating a mesmerizing and almost surreal tableau.

The descent back to Soraypampa was reflective as the lagoon's beauty lingered in our minds. The trek concluded with a satisfying buffet lunch in Mollepata, allowing us to share experiences and relive the morning's adventure before heading back to Cusco.

Ausangate Alpaca Encounter and Trek

Embarking on an expedition through the Peruvian Andes was akin to entering a living, breathing painting where nature's artistry was displayed in its full glory. The journey commenced before dawn, as we departed Cusco at 4:30 am in a private vehicle, the anticipation of the day ahead palpable in the crisp morning air.

After two hours, we arrived at the welcoming Pacchanta community, nestled in the heart of the Ausangate Park. As the sun rose, casting its first light on the majestic peaks, we set off on horseback, heading towards the revered Ausangate Mountain, a symbol of sacred significance in the Cusco region.

The path led us to a local family's home, a haven where multi-colored alpacas roamed freely. Here, I was not just an observer but an active participant in the Andean way of life. Surrounded by these gentle creatures, I got to pet them, feeling a profound connection to the land and its inhabitants. This moment was further sweetened by a delightful breakfast, enjoyed with a backdrop of the Andean landscape's unparalleled beauty.

Our journey continued on horseback, traversing through a landscape that seemed to shift and dance with every step. Ausangate Mountain stood as a silent guardian, overseeing our passage through its bases.

Rainbow Mountain Private Tour

The private tour to Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Montaña de Siete Colores, was a journey into the heart of the Peruvian Andes, marked by an array of natural colors that seemed almost surreal. Our excursion began in the early pre-dawn hours, wrapped in the comfort of warm blankets provided by our guide, symbolizing the personalized care of the entire experience.

Rainbow Mountain is renowned for its breathtaking slopes, adorned with stripes of lavender, turquoise, gold, and other hues, a spectacular display resulting from the unique mineralogical composition in the soil and rock. Situated at an impressive altitude of over 5,200 meters (about 17,060 feet), reaching the summit of this mountain is no small feat, requiring both physical stamina and time to acclimatize to the high elevation.

Our small, intimate group of three set off at 4 AM. The journey started with a nourishing breakfast, essential for the energy needed for the hike. Arriving at the base around 7 AM, we embarked on our ascent, reaching the mountain's summit by 9 AM. The early start meant that we had the mountain almost to ourselves, allowing us to capture stunning, uninterrupted views and photographs of the multicolored panorama.

Standing atop Rainbow Mountain, with its vibrant, striped facade stretching beneath us, we savored cups of coca tea, a traditional Andean remedy that seemed to enhance the already magical atmosphere.

Each of these one-day tours from Cusco has been a testament to the value of small-group travel, allowing for moments of personal connection and reflection that larger tours might overlook. From the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu to the vivid landscapes surrounding Cusco, these explorations have been as integral to my digital nomad experience as the work that brings me to these destinations.

Balancing Work and Adventure

Living in Cusco has been a beautiful mix of work and discovery. The city has everything I need for my digital nomad life, like good internet and nice places to work. But it's more than just a place to work. Cusco's history and nature make every day special and fulfilling.

My days here are a blend of quiet work mornings and exciting adventures. I've seen amazing places like Rainbow Mountain and met friendly alpacas in Ausangate. These experiences have added so much joy to my life.

Cusco has made it easy to finish my work and still have time for fun and exploring. I've ridden horses through ancient trails, hiked to beautiful lagoons, and learned about the local culture. This city shows that you can have a great work-life balance. It's a place where history meets modern life and brings new things to learn and explore daily. My time in Cusco has shown me how rich and exciting a digital nomad's life can be.
